Protestantism is growing rapidly in the traditionally Catholic Dominican Republic

Although Catholicism has always dominated the religious feelings of the Dominican Republic, the popularity of Protestantism has also been growing since followers began immigrating to the island in the 19th century.

North American and West Indian laborers left their homes in the early 1800s to make their way to the Dominican Republic. In fact, in about 100 years, there were national Protestant organizations with links to the larger organizations in the United States.

Although the Dominican Evangelical Church, Seventh Day Adventists, and Assemblies of God had an early dominance in the early 20th century, Pentecostal churches grew in the 1960s and 70s. Currently the Church of God and Baptists have taken their spot aside the Assemblies of God and Pentecostal churches as the top four.

Mormons (Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) and Jehovah's Witnesses are also increasing on the island. The religious freedom allowed on the island has given various churches the chance to take hold.

The island's religious diversity has grown in recent years, and the dominance of the Roman Catholic faith has not caused much trouble for the Protestants of the Dominican Republic.
