Navigating your way through the busy traffic in the Dominican Republic is easier while on a bicycle or moped than in a larger motor vehicle.
By renting a bicycle or moped, vacationers can experience the same traveling freedom as renting a car, but with less of the hassle. The roads on the island are often very busy with traffic, and this can be frustrating for many travelers trying to get around the island. Mopeds and bikes are an easy and fast way to maneuver through busy streets.
Most car rental companies and some hotels rent out mopeds and scooters for about $16(USD) per day. For those on a budget who want to traverse the island independently, renting a moped may be the ideal method of traveling around the island.
Mopeds are fun and cheap to rent, but they can also be dangerous if the necessary precautions aren't taken. Travelers should always wear a helmet when riding on two-wheeled vehicles. Also, be on alert for cars and larger vehicles which may not see the smaller scooters in heavy traffic.
If you are not comfortable with navigating a moped or scooter yourself, you can call on the services of motochocos, or motorcycle taxi. Motochocos are locals riding motorbikes in towns and down rural roads who pick up passengers and take them to their destinations for a small fee of about $3(RD) to $20(RD), depending on how far they travel. They are speedy and agile in heavy traffic, but travelers should always insist on safety when riding on these two-wheel taxis.
Motorbikes and scooters can be fun and inexpensive ways to explore the Dominican Republic.
