While staying in an all-inclusive resort or hotel has its benefits, especially in the Dominican Republic, vacationers who seek autonomy and privacy may wish to consider splashing out on one of the many villas situated close to the ocean.

Consider the appeal of an ocean breeze and the sound of the surf whispering their way to your senses as you sit on a spacious veranda overlooking the sea. Imagine light pouring through your floor-to-ceiling windows and doors as you make your way from your bedroom to the living room in your own rented villa in the Dominican Republic.

Renting a villa or apartment in the Dominican Republic allows you to have one of the world's most peaceful landscapes at your fingertips. These rental locations offer guests several amenities and advantages that all-inclusive resorts and other hotels cannot.

The main draws of rental properties are their privacy and autonomy. Many of these properties are set on several acres of land and have beaches as front yards. Rentals are typically fully loaded with appliances such as TVs, DVD players, Internet connections, and a fully equipped kitchen area. The ability to cook and entertain yourself, all in the privacy of your temporary island home, makes rentals especially attractive. Stocking your kitchen with food and beverages can also go a long way toward saving money on dining costs.

Away from the crowds of the city travelers can enjoy their vacation at their own pace and bask in the glowing white sand and lush vegetation of areas such as Puerto Plata and Casa de Campo. Some villa rentals come with extra amenities like maid service, golf, tennis, watersports, or nearby vendors. With their size, privacy, and amenities, rental villas can be good options for large families or groups of close friends traveling together. Rentals often have up to eight or nine bedrooms and an equal number of bathrooms! For those traveling in smaller, more intimate groups, intimate one- and two-bedroom villas are also available.

When choosing a rental property, look for additional amenities such as swimming pools, barbecues, wheelchair accessibility, backup generators, and air conditioning. Also consider the location of the rental, including whether it is part of a gated, secure rental community.

All of these advantages and amenities do come at a price, however, and budget travelers may find this option out of their reach. While small, one-bedroom lofts may rent for as little as $70(USD) a night, most rates will be anywhere from $150(USD) to $550(USD) to $3,000(USD) a night. On the highest end of the scale, you can find villas for nearly $30,000(USD) a week. A search of the Internet can reveal sites owned by rental companies with detailed descriptions of their properties, rates, and amenities.

Renting a private villa is certainly one of the most luxurious - and most expensive - ways to enjoy the stunning scenery of the Dominican Republic.
